Heritage recently conducted a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey for the Town of Falmouth, to assist them in identifying any unmarked burials within the Town's Old Burying Ground. The cemetery, which was established in the 17th century, today contains 805 marked headstones. The oldest headstone preserved within the cemetery today, has a death date of 1705, and was recorded via photogrammetrically as part of this work.
The GPR survey of the burying ground was incredibly successful, as the soil conditions (sandy) were ideal for GPR survey. Numerous unmarked graves were incredibly clear during the analyses, as indicated below. During the course of this work, a total of 829 probable and possible unmarked burials were identified within the cemetery, bringing the total number of interments to 1,634!
