Architectural Historian

Architectural Historian - Salary: $25 to $30 an hour

Description:

Heritage Consultants, LLC, a leader in cultural resources management in New England and New York, is seeking a Full Time Architectural Historian in its Berlin, Connecticut office. We continue to grow our team of historic preservation specialists and are looking for an energetic person to perform a variety of office and field tasks including historic research and writing, historic resource evaluations/assessments, and property documentations. Come be part of a dynamic and focused team of historic preservation professionals.

Duties

  • Independently manage architectural history and historic preservation projects;

  • Assist other project managers with architectural history components of projects that also require archaeological efforts and general project assessments;

  • Complete historic resource surveys of residential, commercial, and industrial properties using tablets and GPS, photography, and other survey methodologies;

  • Conduct archival research, focusing on primary and secondary sources;

  • Prepare historic narratives and context statements;

  • Evaluate resources applying the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria;

  • Prepare and defend National Register of Historic Places nominations;

  • Assist clients with tax credit applications and follow through documentation;

  • Prepare defensible compliance documentation in support of NHPA/Section 106 review;

  • Work closely with the Cultural Resources Director, Principal Investigators, and Project Managers to advance projects to completion while producing high caliber documentation;

  • Formulate and provide clear management recommendations for preservation of built resources to be reviewed by client and SHPOs.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Architectural History or a closely related field;

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in cultural resources management as an architectural historian;

  • Prior experience managing projects;

  • A working knowledge of federal and state cultural resources and historic preservation laws and practices, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the history/architectural history of the Northeastern United States.

Additional Information

  • Travel may be required on some project;

  • Ability to handle time-sensitive or time-critical requests;

Field Director

Field Director - Salary: $23/hr or higher depending on experience

Description:

Heritage Consultants is growing again! We are seeking a full-time Field Director based out of our Berlin, Connecticut office. She or he will be responsible for conducting archaeological undertakings of all types and sizes from planning through report completion. The applicant must be a self-starter and have strong organizational, verbal, and writing skills the ability to work as part of a larger team and broad experience in all phases of archaeological investigations from Phase IA assessment surveys to Phase III data recovery efforts.

Duties

  • Working closely with Senior Management and Operations Personnel to plan and execute projects within project scoping, timelines, and budgets;

  • Coordination and communication with clients, relevant agency personnel, and interested parties while in the field;

  • Working in tandem with other project personnel, including laboratory staff, historians, architectural historians and GIS specialists;

  • Directing and supervising field crews and other staff assigned to projects;

  • Completing cultural resource management reports and other deliverables to company and agency satisfaction that comply with applicable state and federal laws/regulations and guidelines promulgated by State Historic Preservation Offices throughout the region;

  • Training new archaeological staff in appropriate field techniques, archaeological best practices, and other duties, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in anthropology/archaeology preferred

  • A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience in cultural resources management

  • At least one year of full-time, supervisory level, professional experience in cultural resources management

  • At least one year of full-time experience in the management of field crews and budgets

  • In-depth understanding of archaeological field methods for all phases of work

  • Detailed experience in using GPS equipment for field recordation, as well as all other field equipment

  • A working understanding of historic preservation law, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act

  • Willingness to travel for field projects with hotel stays during the work week (as needed)

  • Ability to work outdoors in variable temperatures and in weather that may include rain or snow

  • Ability to hike difficult terrain while carrying field equipment

Field Archaeologist

Field Archaeologist - Salary: $19 to $22/hr

Description:

Heritage Consultants is seeking Field Archaeologists for project-to-project work in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Fieldwork will include Phase I cultural resources surveys and Phase II testing projects, as well as potential laboratory duties and report assistance.

Duties

  • Conduct archaeological survey, monitoring, and excavation (Phase I, II, and III).

  • Use electronic and traditional navigational equipment (GPS, tablet/ArcCollector, compass, and transit).

  • Photo-document features, excavation units, landscapes, historic structures, archaeological sites, and work in progress.

  • Record accurate, organized, and clear project documentation.

  • Complete project tasks as directed by Field Director.

  • Travel to and from work areas throughout New England and New York.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field

  • Completed an accredited archaeological field school

  • Experience performing archaeological survey and excavation

  • Ability to work in diverse terrain that will involves hiking to and from project areas

Project Archaeologist - Salary: Commensurate with experience

The successful candidate must meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior qualifications. She or he will be responsible for conducting archaeological undertakings of all types and sizes from planning through report completion. The applicant must be a self-starter and have strong organizational, verbal, and writing skills the ability to work as part of a larger team and broad experience in all phases of archaeological investigations from Phase IA assessment surveys to Phase III data recovery efforts. Heritage Consultants, LLC is seeking candidates with experience in either New England precontact era archaeology or historical archaeology.
